Mcdull, Prince De La Bun

Director: Yuen Kin To
Colour/78mins/2004

McDull with his small eyes and big snout is a shy, social deficient young piglet with one hell of a tough talking but ever loving mother! Stuck in Spring Flower Kindergarten learning the ins and outs of modern life while around him the urban redevelopment is pulling down Hong Kong and threatening his school, McDull uses his healthy imagination to cope with the upheavals in his life. Similarly, his mother is so desperate for a better future that she is led to constant distraction, spending her days collecting odds and ends and searching for a way to cure her son's extremely shaky leg!

Keen to involve her son in the fantastical adventure of Prince de la Bun, she spins a tale, thinly disguised as that of McDull's errant father. It's the story of a prince, who after wandering from his castle befriends a young turtle with a pizza pie head. They pass the years in a complacent stupor until the dim-witted pig realises he should reclaim his crown and abandons all the things we ordinary folk hold dear. It's a tale of every man, or every pig's, mid life crisis with many metaphorical implications of urban life in Hong Kong.

Director Toe Yuen has used standard animation and 3D to create a unique and colourful reflection of real life and how it is ordinary, ridiculous, special and magical all at the same time.

Dubbed by filmmakers as 100 % Hong Kong animation, McDull, Prince de la Bun is an animated love letter to the people that live there.
